Almost 5 years to today, 24th August 2016 to be exact a young Dromintee U12 team had their world turned upside down when they were narrowly beaten in the championship final by Mullaghbawn.
It’s taken five years to exact revenge but on Monday evening last they done it in some style with an impressive performance to reach the U16:5 division 2 championship final on a scoreline of Dromintee 5:11 v Mullaghbawn 1:1.
For long periods this was a competitive and robust challenge and the Dromintee girls knew this was very different match from their league match back at the end of May.
Dromintee only conceded two scores over the hour and much of the credit goes to a hard working defensive unit led excellently by Cliodhna Mc Coy at fullback and Ciara Walker at centre half. A team that concedes little must have a good goalkeeper & Emma Murtagh has proven herself an excellent netminder and launchpad for the teams attacks.
Either side of Cliodhna Mc Coy, Lizzy Daly & Tiernagh Shannon have a solid look and ably repel any attacks while Tara Markey continues to improve at wing half back while Aoibhe Hoey marked excellently and was heavily involved in keeping scores conceded to a minimum.
The midfield of Aoibh O’Neill & Grainne O’Rourke have a great work ethic and constantly link defence and attack with selfless running and blocking. At wing half Rea winters continues to demonstrate her footballing ability and is having a great season.
Rose Boden’s talent is obvious and she links and takes fine scores for the team constantly running at the opposition, while Sarah Conlon has made a good return from injury and is rediscovering her form.
Young Nicola Campbell does a lot of unselfish winning of dirty ball and provides a constant supply of posession to the other forwards. Sarah Graham and Alanah O’Neill shared 3:5 between them which is an impressive fulcrum of the attack and the spread of scorers was impressive too with both Niamh Mc Cormick and Mairead Martin second half substitutes chipping in with useful points to keep the home side well ahead.
The other substitutes included Mollie Morgan, Sadhbh Mc Keever and Aoife Murphy who all slotted into the back line to keep the defence on their toes and keep out any further scores.
The teams attention now turns to Ballyhegan who defeated Granemore narrowly in the other semi final.
Dromintee will remember the earlier championship fixture five weeks back when they narrowly defeated Ballyhegan by one point, not before they were put to the pin of the collar in a close and competitive battle. No date yet for final but the winning team this evening was:

The Dromintee U16 team were excellently kitted out in new Jersey’s sponsored by Digney Grant, represented by Anthony Boden who had a lovely message on the sleeves “if she can’t see it she can’t be it” - emphasising that these girls can be seen as role models for other young aspiring girls within the club demonstrating the skills of the game.
On a wonderful night the Dromintee U16 girls did the Dromintee club proud and the young girls in attendance at the match were all able to see it and experience what it meant to these girls who are all role models for the club.
