A fantastic day for our local schools at the Cumann na Bunscol Malachy McGeeney Finals.
Dromintee Primary School claimed victory over Clonalig Primary School in a terrific primary schools final played in very warm conditions and contested with great intensity by two evenly matched teams. On a hot day that tested effort and character, the Dromintee lads showed tremendous resilience, discipline and teamwork throughout. Scores were worked patiently and taken well, while defensively every player emptied the tank for the jersey. It was a performance full of heart, energy and commitment, and one that made the entire school community incredibly proud - not just of the boys involved in the final, but of all the boys and girls who have represented the school throughout the year at blitzes, matches and training sessions. Their effort, attitude and sportsmanship throughout the season reflect hugely on the school and parish.
The school would like to express its sincere gratitude to coaches Gareth McCoy and Nicole McKenna, who, alongside Greg McCabe, have devoted countless hours to coaching and supporting both boys’ and girls’ teams during the year. Their dedication and generosity with their time has had a hugely positive impact on the children, and is deeply appreciated by the school and parents alike.
A massive thank you is also extended to our sponsors: Vincy & Joanne Martin for sponsoring the jerseys on the day, Colly & Hannah McCormack for providing new half-zips for the boys, and Gareth & Fiona McCoy for supplying new gloves ahead of the final. The school would also like to acknowledge Dromintee GAA Club for generously covering the cost of transport for the team, a gesture that reflects the strong bond between club and school.
We fondly remember Mrs Wendy McKeown, former Principal, who began this journey with these pupils seven years ago. We also thank Mrs Martina Rooney, our new Principal, for her tremendous support in the lead-up to the final - and for treating the squad to a well-earned celebratory McDonald’s afterwards, proving that Down and Armagh can come together when it matters most.
Thanks, are also extended to all school staff, particularly Geraldine McCoy, a constant presence and supporter at matches and blitzes, and Ms Lennon and Mrs Kelly, the P6 and P7 teachers, for their continued encouragement and support throughout the year.
Finally, congratulations to our neighbouring school and fellow parishioners Jonesborough on their victory today. A fantastic day for the parish, the schools and the football club, and a wonderful showcase of the strength of underage football in the area.

Jonesboro PS retain Malachy McGeeney Cup
Jonesboro PS retained the Malachy McGeeney Cup after a fierce battle with St Michael's Clady. A nervy 1st half ended Jonesboro leading 3 points to 1 thanks to points from Harry,Cian & Charlie coupled with some courageous defending by Pearse& Ellie with goalkeeper Calvin executing brilliant kickouts. In 2nd half it was a war of attrition again and whilst the standard of attacking play didn't match the heights of the semi final, this was compensated by extraordinary level of workrate & endeavour. After getting into a 5-4 lead,Clady hit 2 on the bounce despite the heroics of Daniel & Fiadh in defence to lead for the first time . With time running out, a long range point from Harry & incredible pressure from the resulting kickout from Finn, Cian & Charlie resulted in a match winning goal that led to Jonesboro winning by the minimum 7-6.
The final whistle was greeted with joyous schemes by both players and the bus load of supporters that made the trip to the Athletic grounds and it was left to Cahir, Saorlaith & Charlie as joint captains to have the honour if lifting the cup for an historic 2 in a row victory! Over the course of this historic campaign Jonesborough wouldn't of been at Finals Day today if it hadn't of been for Senan, Annie, Sean, Cahir & the injured Eoin who all played a massive part across the year and we hope everyone enjoys the celebrations!
Special word of mention goes to Dromintee PS Boys Team that set the tone for the day by clinching their respective Malachy McGeeney final and Jonesboro PS took great pleasure in forming a Guard of Honour when descending from the podium for their clubmates ahead of their own final!
A great day for the Parish!
Also, special mention to Aoibh and her St Michaels PS, Killean teammates who put in a great effort, playing some fantastic football but unfortunately lost out to a strong team from Middletown.
